_20160606_174244.png

Hi All

I apologise for posting in English. With a mixture of English, Swiss German, guessing, (and Google Translate) I can more or less read Svenska, but I would make a fool of myself If I attempted to write it  .

I have spent the last few evenings trawling the furthest corners of the web looking for solutions to controlling a Hendi “Manual” induction hob using an Arduino or a Raspberry PI. In the small wee hours of Saturday night I hit on this thread (don’t ask me how) that suggests a well developed solution (actually several). Mana from Heaven!

I want to thank all the forum members who contributed to the solution(s) proposed. This saves time, expensive mistakes, and possibly lives for others like me just embarking on this journey.

I have been home brewing for many years, starting in the UK as a student, and more recently in Switzerland where I now live. Currently I use 2 65 ltr Stainless Steel kettles to mash, lauter, boil and ferment in. The boil kettle sits on a 3.8 KW gas ring, and the mash tun on a 3.5 KW induction hob. All of this is completely manually operated - until now!

It is now mid summer, too warm to brew in Switzerland, but due to the terrible bad weather not good for paragliding, so I am using the time to upgrade my home-brewery! Part of the upgrade is automating the mash process.

My current induction hob is a Better China digital model. While it has a knob on front for power, it is a rotary encoder, not a pot. It may not be totally impossible to hack this unit, but I think it will probably be easier and cheaper to buy a manual Hendi and hack it following the ideas in this thread, especially the scheme developed by AHM.

@AHM: I have the following questions about your solution:
1) If I have understood correctly, your control pcb circumvents the pot. i.e. the hob can no longer be controlled by the knob on the front?
2) The temperature probe is connected to the control pub (inside the hob), rather than to the Raspberry (outside the hob). Why?
3) What are the advantages of the OneWire DS1820 over any other temperature sensors / sensor types?

b.t.w, replies in Svenska, I hope i will be able to understand …. 8)

Answer in Swedish, let me now if you want details in English.

Hi!

A rotary encoder would be really simple to emulate with a microcontroller or a raspberry pi, so if I were in your shoes, I'd give it a try.

I'd still take extreme caution working with it, as I have no doubt that regardless of the model, it would have a logic ground that is floating at a pretty high voltage. Use optocouplers and use a connector that is isolated from the chassie.

You'd probably not need more than a few optocouplers and a couple of resistors. Only, with a rotary encoder, you can't give an absolute value, you can only increase or decrease from 'where you are now'. You could probably work around that by increasing or decreasing until you are sure you've hit max or off and then use dead reckoning to keep track of where you are.

Personally, I'd give it a go, but if you're more comfortable with trying your luck with the 'manual' Hendi, AHM's design seems very good and hopefully he can chime in and answer your questions.

Edit: too slow :)

Cheers!

Gentlemen, thank you for your rapid replies!

We have a beautiful evening in Switzerland. I am sitting on my terrace as the sun goes down, digesting your answers, lubricated by a 3rd pint of Hippy IPA that I brewed earlier in the year. It makes reading Swedish much easier!

@AHm

Maybe I was asking for trouble, requesting you reply in Svenska, as I did not want to hijack the thread into an English one. But I think I worked it out! Below are my translations of your answers; and then my answers back.

1. I briefly tried to connect the PCB in parallel to the potentiometer, and it looked ok, but I have not tried all possible combinations. I guess it should not be a problem.

—> The issue I had in mind is manual override. From experience what can go wrong will go wrong! So to have the ability to yank out the connection to the Raspberry and continue with manual control via the knob to “save the day” would be valuable to me.
2. I chose the option of connecting the OneWire to the PCB, because my measuring point will be in the pan. If that is not the case, you can connect direct to the Raspberry instead.

—> Google Translate makes a pig’s ear of your Swedish (“…I will always have a measuring point on the roll wool…”), and at first I did not trust my translation - until bingo! it now makes sense. Presumably you want to locate the fragile and sensitive Raspberry far away from the dangerous induction hob and bubbling pots of hot sticky wort. So a thermometer connection to the pcb in the hob will be closer to the pan, requiring a shorter lead to the sensor. (b.t.w, why does OSX keep autocorrecting “pcb” to “pub”? Context sensitive autocorrection gone mad?).
3. The main advantage is that it is easy to connect to the Raspberry, other than that there are no advantages to the DS1820 as it is quite slow.

—> The DS1820 may be slow and not very accurate, but is looks like it is fast and accurate enough for our application: mashing. From threads elsewhere on the web, choice of sensor seems to be almost a religious question. I am happy to go for something that is proven to work for mashing, easy to integrate, and easy to purchase.

@Bryggapa

The devil sitting on one shoulder agrees with you. It is probably possible to emulate a rotary encoder for my ID-500B, which appears to be sister model to the IK 35 referred to in this German thread http://hobbybrauer.de/modules.php?name= ... &tid=17866 (the internals look identical, only the control PCB seems to be different).

Another option might be to order the control pcb BT-350-DIS for the IK 35 https://www.bartscher.de/blobs/Explosio ... 835_de.pdf, and follow _Heiner’s solution (hoping that the micro controller on the motherboard is the same for both models).

However the angel sitting on my other shoulder says “Chris, the last time you did any serious electronics was 35 years ago as a 10 year-old boy when you build a crystal radio following a Ladybird book…”. An induction hob also has deadly levels of volts and amps, so at the end-of-the-day I think it will be cheaper and safer to restrain my natural instinct to experiment, and instead to go for a proven solution that you gents have developed, even if that means purchasing a new hob.

Cheers and tack,

Chris

You are correct in that the hob does contain deadly voltage levels (as does any mains connected device) and that is not something that anyone should treat with respect. If you are not comfortable with this type of 'hacking', then it is best to leave it alone.
That said, the hobs does have clear separation of the power electronics on one PCB and and low voltage control electronics on another. And simply 'replacing' the manual inputs with an electronically controlled equivalent is not brain surgery. You just need to be careful. And specifically, you need to use optocouplers to completely isolate the low level electronics inside the hob from any external electronics.

Now, with that said, there IS another option. Not as elegant, but a lot 'safer' ( that is no risk of messing up your hob or giving yourself a shock) and that is to use a cheap servo motor to physically turn the knob from the outside. You'd need to fabricate a mounting bracket for the servomotor an attach it to the knob. easiest is probably to attach the servo on the side of the hob, and use a belt drive to the knob.
Servos are easy to interface and give absolute positioning.

Cheers!
